What to wear for your newborn session?
Welcoming a new baby into your home is such a special milestone, and an in-home newborn photo session is the perfect way to capture these early days in a comfortable, relaxed setting. One of the most common questions I hear as an Atlanta newborn photographer is: “What should we wear?” The good news is—you don’t need to overthink it. Here are some simple tips to help you and your family look and feel your best.
Keep It Simple and Comfortable
Your photos will shine when you feel comfortable and the focus is on your connection with your baby. Soft, neutral tones—like whites, creams, pastels, or earthy shades—photograph beautifully indoors and create a timeless look. Think cozy knits, flowy dresses, or a favorite soft top. Comfort is key.
I usually recommend choosing your outfit first and then building from there. Whatever outfit makes you feel like your favorite, most authentic version of yourself is the perfect choice. For some people that means a dress while for others it’s leggings and a sweater.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of putting everyone in the exact same color, try coordinating shades from a similar palette. For example, if you choose light neutrals, one parent might wear a cream sweater while the other wears a light gray shirt, with siblings in muted tones to tie it together. This creates harmony without feeling too staged.
Layers and textures always photograph well - chunky sweaters, a shear blouse over a tank top. For dads, I usually recommend that they’re a little more casual. An untucked button down with the sleeves rolled up, jeans and a sweater or polo, or a henley
Choose Baby-Friendly Outfits
For your little one, simple is best. A solid color onesie or romper, a soft swaddle, or a diaper cover works beautifully. Avoid bold logos or outfits with words—tiny details can distract in photos. A lightweight blanket or heirloom piece, like a knitted hat or special quilt, is a lovely way to add meaning without overwhelming the images.
Barefoot & Natural
Since most in-home sessions take place on the couch, bed, or nursery floor, don’t stress about shoes—bare feet often feel the most natural. The goal is effortless (or as effortless as one can be with a baby), lived-in, and cozy.
Final Tip: Be Yourself
Remember, your newborn session is about capturing your family’s story as it really is. Wear what makes you feel most at ease. If you feel comfortable and confident, that joy will shine through in every image.
